The following post about gratitude and hosting an exchange student was contributed by Melissa Jackson, host mom and former Local Coordinator who now serves as a Field Developer with Academic Year in America (AYA).

Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can transform our perspective on life. As a host family opening my home to an exchange student, it allowed me to embark on a journey of cultural exchange and personal growth.

Here are some of my reflections on the impact of hosting an international student:

Fresh Perspectives

Hosting an exchange student provided has me an opportunity to see my own life and surroundings from a different angle. Through the eyes of someone from another country, we gained fresh perspectives on everyday routines, traditions, and values. Mundane activities became extraordinary when shared with someone who viewed them with curiosity and wonder.

Shared Moments

It’s often the small, seemingly ordinary moments that create lasting memories. Whether it’s cooking a meal together, playing board games, or simply chatting over a cup of tea, these shared experiences became cherished memories. The laughter, conversations, and shared meals weaved a new thread into the fabric of family life.

Gratitude for Togetherness

Sometimes, it takes an outsider to remind us of the value of togetherness. I have so much gratitude for the time spent with my exchange student—whether it was exploring a new city, attending school events, or simply sitting around the dinner table. These shared moments have strengthened our family bonds and created lifelong connections.

Cultural Blending

Welcoming an exchange student into our family meant integrating her into daily life. From celebrating holidays to participating in local events, our student became part of the community and a true member of our family. We learned just as much about our student’s culture, language, and traditions, as the student learned from us. This mutual exchange enriched all involved.

In summary, hosting an exchange student goes beyond simply providing a place to stay; it involves opening our hearts and minds to a world of possibilities.

We have discovered a newfound appreciation for our own uniqueness—the quirks, traditions, and everyday moments that may have previously been taken for granted or overlooked. Cultural exchange teaches us to celebrate our individuality and recognize the extraordinary within ourselves. It fosters a profound awareness of the power of gratitude, creating a reciprocal current that flows from the host family to the student and extends into the greater community. As we navigated cultural differences, learned from each other, and formed lasting connections, the experience enriched everyone involved.
