Each year Academic Year in America asks students and Local Coordinators across the U.S. to nominate host families for AYA’s Host Family of the Year. We ask them to nominate their family based on hospitality, caring, dedication to cultural exchange, and overall willingness to welcome an exchange student into their home. This recognition is one small way for students and Local Coordinators to say ‘thank you’ for all that they do!
We commend all our host families who have and continue to support our mission of bringing the world together by hosting our international students and welcoming them into their home and community as one of their own.
This year AYA is proud to announce that the Anderson family of Roca, Nebraska has won the 2015 Host Family of the Year. The Anderson family has been with AYA for a year now and has impacted their students, community and Local Coordinator in such a positive way.
Hear from their student, Julia from Germany, why she nominated her family:
They taught me that family is the most powerful and amazing thing you can have. They taught me values, respect and honesty. They taught me how to have an amazing life and what matters and what doesn’t. They taught me so much about life, I can’t even describe it. The fact is, they changed the way I think about life in a positive way. I will always stay in touch with my second family and visit as often as possible. Distance cannot separate hearts!
Thank you Julia for sharing why you nominated your family and congratulations to the Anderson family from Nebraska for making such a positive difference in Julia’s life. If you want to learn more about how you can make a difference in an exchange student’s life, become a host family!
