Get Involved. It’s Rewarding!

May 20, 2015 AYA Leave a Comment

Why is getting involved in your school and community so rewarding? AYA Grant student Irman shares with us why getting involved at school was so rewarding and fun!

My name is Irman, and I am from Bangladesh. I am a senior at my high school in Pennsylvania, and I wanted to share with you why I chose to get involved with as many things as I could during my exchange year in America.

Volunteer!

At school I volunteered on the track team, Recreation Department at the elementary school and the Red Cross! I love volunteering because I get to give back to the student body and spend time getting to know others. I also learned a lot of new skills!

Join a club!

At my high school there are so many different clubs you can join. I joined the Art Club, International Club, Going Green Club, All Things Business Club and the Leo Club. Since I joined these clubs I have been able to participate in so may new activities, learn new things about myself and make new friends.

Participate with AYA!

Participating in activities with my Host Family is always a lot of fun. We visited many new places and went site seeing around the U.S. together. I’ve had the opportunity to go to Chicago, New York, Virginia and Florida. I even got to go to Mid-Year Orientation in Disneyland with AYA, which was awesome! It was an honor to go and to have met all of my fellow AYA Grant Exchange students and members of the AYA team.

Ultimately, my stay in Pennsylvania has been great and I feel so lucky to have experienced so many things. I would like to thank my Local Coordinator, American Host Family and of course AYA! It’s been a wonderful year! I would recommend to any future AYA students, to get involved with as many things as you can! It’s so rewarding!

Thanks Irman for sharing your academic year experience and all the different things you got involved with during your year in the U.S. To find out more about becoming an AYA student, click here.
