Several of last year’s AYA students took some time to write letters to the upcoming class of high school exchange students, which we will continue to share throughout the summer months. They wrote about their reflections, advice and best wishes to help next year’s group get the best start on making the most of their upcoming exchange experience.
The messages in these letters are valuable—to all participants in Academic Year in America programs. Host families and Local Coordinators can read these letters to understand the student’s perspective, and they can share these letters with upcoming students to help them get prepared.
Today’s letter is from Alif from Indonesia. Alif was a YES student and spent his high school exchange living with a host family in New York.
Dear exchange students,
Welcome to the States! I bet you’re feeling happy, sad, and nervous, right? It’s alright. Those feelings are normal. Exchange year is a really unique experience, and no one can ever predict how it will go.
One thing is for sure, though. Ups and downs are a part of the experience itself. Don’t let bad stuff make you depressed; it’s just the dynamics of life. When the good stuff happens, always make the most of it.
Challenge yourself and make sure you jump with both feet. Exchange experience is all about going out of the comfort zone. Trust me. You’ll be surprised with what you are capable of. Remember that most of the times you are required to make the first step, especially in the context of family relation and making new friends.
Most importantly, believe that your exchange year is already suited for your personal development. Be proud of what you will experience and learn from it. Appreciate what you will get.
I truly wish that you will have a blast for the year to come. Enjoy!
Best wishes,
Alif
