Local Coordinator Dina Berg organized a community service project for a group of AYA students in South Carolina to help out and learn a little at the Howe Springs Fire Department. Here’s what she had to say about the day:
A Day at the Fire Department
This fall, I brought my students to Howe Springs Fire Department for a community service project. The group had such a great time! They washed the fire trucks, rolled up hoses and learned about all of the equipment used on the rescue trucks. A lot of my students had never seen a “real” fire truck in person before, and it was thrilling for them to see it up close with all of the different gadgets! The fire department was very happy that we came and are going to put the picture of all of the kids with the firemen and fire truck on their webpage! They invited us to come back in the spring to do some more volunteering, and the students happily agreed!
Thanks to Dina and the Howe Springs Fire Department for organizing this great event, and thanks to these wonderful high school exchange students for participating with such enthusiasm. You did us all proud!
We’re always looking for fun and engaging ideas for volunteer activities to share with our foreign exchange community. If you have suggestions—or stories of your own community service projects you’d like to tell us about, please leave us a comment after this post or reach out via social media.
