Hosting an International Awareness event is a great way to help people learn more about the world around us. These are great opportunities for AYA high school exchange students to share and participate with fellow students and other members of the community. The following story, shared by Cindi, a Local Coordinator from Pennsylvania, highlights a wonderful experience two AYA students had at an International Awareness Night.
Sensu from Turkey and Joe from China represented their countries at an International Awareness Night sponsored by a local charter school. At this event, students, ages kindergarten through grade 5, were given a “passport” and were encouraged to embark on a journey to visit all 20 countries to get their passport stamped. Sensu and Joe did such a good job with their table display and interaction with the children and families that the school administrators were surprised to find out they were high school students! They were thought to have been students from a local college.
If you are planning an international event and you have AYA international exchange students living in your community, reaching out to get them involved is a great option to enrich your program and welcome these wonderful young men and women into your community.
