For many students, an exchange year is their first time navigating unfamiliar situations in a new country. As they figure out life in the U.S., exchange students naturally build confidence, develop independence, learn new skills, and broaden their perspective of the world. While every student’s journey is different, each one is made possible thanks to the generous commitment of a U.S. host family who opens their doors and welcomes them into their homes.
Here are just a few ways hosting a high school exchange student helps young people grow, illustrated through stories shared in AYA Host Family of the Year nominations.

Building Confidence Through New Experiences
Growth often begins when students are encouraged to try things they’ve never done before. Experiences like joining a high school sports team, participating in host family activities, or exploring a new region of the world put them in new environments and challenge them to adapt.
Through his host brothers, Eyan and Justin, Fateen from Bangladesh had several new experiences that helped him learn practical skills and grow more confident during his time in the U.S.:
“Eyan was the first person to teach me how to fish, and he was always patient with me, even when I made mistakes or didn’t understand things. He also helped me with small but important skills like tying knots and even tying my shoelaces properly. Justin is also very kind and generous. Both of them are really good at cooking, and I sometimes try to help them, even though I’m not very skilled yet.”
New experiences don’t have to be major milestones or once-in-a-lifetime adventures. Even the everyday experience of living in the U.S. can help exchange students discover just how capable they really are.

Developing Independence
Living in another country naturally encourages students to become more independent. Away from the familiarity of home, they learn how to navigate challenges, solve everyday problems, and take responsibility for themselves.
Growth frequently happens through small moments that build over time. And as a host family, you’re in a perfect position to allow your exchange student enough freedom to become independent, while offering the guidance they need to thrive.
Helena reflected on the impact the Holloway family had on her personal growth during her exchange year:
“My host family just wants me to have the best year in my life and the best experience… They helped me [become] more independent and improve my skills in [every] way.”
An exchange year provides countless opportunities for students to tackle everyday issues, gain self-reliance, and grow into more confident young adults. As Helena’s experience shows, the support and encouragement of a host family can help students develop greater independence that helps them grow.

Becoming More Resilient
Adjusting to a new culture, language, school, and community can be difficult at first, but it’s usually hugely rewarding in the end. Every challenge exchange students overcome helps build resilience, and the more they learn to navigate unfamiliar situations, the stronger and more adaptable they become.
While it’s important to allow students to navigate some issues on their own, good host families know when to step in and provide support.
Feras from Israel was fortunate to have support from her host family, the Hackmans, who encouraged him to try out for sports and helped her manage his emotions during a difficult period:
“They included me in the family since the first week, encouraging me to play sports, helped me and coached me through sports as well. They care about me and about my mental health because of the war in my country and told me that they would be so happy to host me again.”

Expanding Perspectives and Understanding
One of the most lasting forms of growth comes from seeing the world through new eyes. The simple act of living in the U.S. naturally exposes students to new perspectives and helps them build a broader understanding of the world.
Anushka from India described how living with the Beyer family, who hosted several students from many different countries, exposed her to a wide array of cultures, traditions, and viewpoints. At the same time, she was able to share her own culture and experiences. As she explained, what she learned will stay with her forever:
“This experience has not only broadened my perspective but has also shown me the true meaning of empathy, inclusion, and global unity. I will carry these lessons and memories with me for a lifetime.”

For many students, an exchange year changes how they see the world. They return home with a deeper understanding of other cultures, greater empathy for people from different backgrounds, and friendships that span continents.
And this goes both ways: just as exchange students broaden their worldview during their program, host families can, too. Host parents and siblings grow alongside the exchange student, gaining a deeper understanding of different cultures, traditions, and perspectives through daily conversations, shared experiences, and meaningful relationships. It’s one of the beauties of cultural exchange—and it often comes naturally for families who choose to host.

The benefits of hosting an exchange student extend far beyond a single year. Throughout the experience, students grow in various ways as they navigate life in the U.S. and connect with their host family and community at large.
For host families, one of the most rewarding parts of the experience is watching that transformation unfold. By simply opening your home and sharing your daily life, you can create an environment where young people thrive and discover their potential.
