We’re excited to spotlight one of our incredible exchange students who truly represents the heart of cultural exchange. Meet Houriegodny—who goes by Fira—an inspiring exchange student from Indonesia currently spending her high school year in South Carolina. Between embracing new experiences and building meaningful cross-cultural connections, Fira has made a lasting impression on her host family and local community.

Why did you want to do an exchange year in the United States?

“Because it gives a great opportunity to enhance my personal skills: critical thinking, communication skills, leadership, global perspective and many more. It also allowed me improve my English skills and add more relationship.”

Tell us about your host family and why you appreciate them.

“My host family is a single mother. She is the best person I’ve ever met in my exchange year, the one that always helps me whenever I found difficulties, the one who took care of me and always making sure I am all fine.”

What have you learned about American culture and how have you shared your culture with Americans?

“I have learned a lot about American culture, whether it’s food, habits, or holidays. In the other hand, I also make sure the goals of the program are achieved: cultural exchange. I have shared my culture through presentations, daily communications, even through art! And I am excited to learn even more about American culture and share more of my culture!”
