Keep reading to follow Ilina’s journey as a high school exchange student from North Macedonia and see how her time in Texas has shaped her exchange year in the United States.
Why did you want to do an exchange year in the United States?
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to do an exchange year in the United States. I’ve always been curious about the world beyond my home country and the idea of living in a different country, experiencing a new culture, and stepping outside my comfort zone has always inspired me. Living in a new place, surrounded by different people and ideas, is one of the best ways to grow as a person.
The United States especially interested me because of its diversity, strong school spirit, and the chance to experience a culture I had only seen from afar. I wanted the opportunity to see what everyday life and school are really like in America, meet new people, and challenge myself through new experiences. At the same time, I was really excited to share where I come from. Macedonia is a small country that many people don’t know much about, and I wanted to introduce others to our culture, traditions, and way of life. And thanks to the YES Program and AYA, my life long dream is now a reality.”
Tell us about your host family and why you appreciate them.
“From the moment I first received my placement report and spoke with my host family, we clicked instantly, and I knew I had made the right choice. Even before I arrived, we were already talking, laughing and building a connection, and they made sure I felt prepared and excited for this journey.
When I finally came to the U.S., they welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like a true part of their family from day one. Since then, we’ve shared countless activities, trips, and everyday moments that I will treasure forever. They’ve introduced me to American culture, shared their values, and given me a deeper appreciation for family, and the everyday moments that bring people together. Their warmth, care, and support have made this exchange year more meaningful than I could have ever imagined, and I truly can’t picture experiencing it with anyone else.”

What have you learned about American culture and how have you shared your culture with Americans?
“During my exchange year, I’ve learned so much about American culture. From how much people value community, family, and school spirit, and how everyday life can be full of energy, kindness, and new experiences. I’ve also seen how important traditions and celebrations are, and how people find small ways to connect with each other every day.
At the same time, I’ve loved sharing my own culture with Americans. I’ve told them about Macedonia, our traditions, food, and history, and shared what makes my home and family special. It’s been amazing to see their curiosity and excitement, and to realize that even small stories about my life can help people understand and connect with a place they’ve never known.
Experiencing American culture while sharing my own has not only taught me so much about the U.S., but also reminded me how meaningful it is to connect with others through who you are and where you come from.”
