Host families do so much to show students from around the world what America is really like. It means so much to these students to live as part of an American family and go to school and interact with American teenagers.
As you’ll see in the passage below, Marie, an exchange student from Germany, describes how much she enjoyed participating in a high school musical — but what really meant the most to her was the support she received from her host family.
My most memorable experience in America so far was the spring musical. The spring musical this year was The Sound of Music, which is set in Austria and has some German related aspects in it. Being part of the play was a turning point in my school year. I became friends with some really awesome people and was able to partake in a totally new experience. Most of all, I was thrilled that my host family came to watch the play! I could tell how proud they were of me. It really showed me that they consider me part of their family!
Hosting an exchange student is an enriching opportunity and a whole lot of fun, too! If you are interested in becoming an ambassador for America and helping a young person learn about life in the U.S., please visit Academic Year in America to get started.
