Spring has officially sprung, serving everyone who’s been cooped up all winter with a (literal) breath of fresh air! Here at Academic Year in America (AYA), we love hearing about all of the fun springtime activities that our host families and exchange students enjoy. As the weather gets nicer and the days get longer, there are so many opportunities to make lasting memories with your exchange student in the spring. Are you in need of some exciting spring activity ideas?
Here are 5 simple spring activity ideas for host families and exchange students throughout the United States:
1. Have a Picnic at a Local Park
Looking for something fun to do on a mild, sunny afternoon? Pack a few sandwiches, grab a blanket, and drive to your favorite local park (or beach if you live near one!) to enjoy a picnic lunch with your exchange student. This is an easy, hassle-free way to turn an average afternoon into a memorable one.
2. Fly Kites Together
A nostalgic spring activity, flying kites is a great excuse for getting outside. Pick a day that’s windy enough to embark on a fun-filled, kite-flying adventure with your exchange student. If you’re feeling extra ambitious and crafty, you could even try making your own kites – and enjoy a few laughs while testing them out.
3. Go for a Bike Ride
Find a nearby trail, brush the dust off the bikes in your garage, and enjoy a bike ride. This is a great way to get active and to (finally) enjoy the outdoors after a long winter inside. Plus, it’s also an awesome way to explore the beauty of your local area. Be sure to stop for photos throughout!
4. Take a Road Trip
Spring’s mild weather makes it an ideal time for road-tripping. Pick a few points on the map and design your own road trip loop, showing your exchange student some of your favorite local points of interest along the way. Or, you could travel to a location that neither of you have been to before and enjoy an exciting first while exploring it together.
5. Plant Something in Your Garden
Grow something in your garden (or plant a garden) with your exchange student! This spring activity will not only be a wonderful bonding experience, the garden will also leave something beautiful to remember your exchange student by once they return home.
