For all that they do for students, host families and communities across the country, it isn’t unusual for our exchange students to form lasting bonds with their Local Coordinators. However, the following update from Colleen Robinson, an LC from Louisiana, is pretty special. Colleen reunited with the first AYA student she ever placed with a host family — after more than 20 years had passed!
Louisiana Reunion
Consuelo is the first student I placed in New Orleans, back in 1991. She came back to visit with her husband of one year, and we had such a wonderful visit catching up on all the news. We made sure to take another picture in my home just like when she was a teenager, as you can see. Connie is now a hostess on a fast train between Madrid and other big cities in Spain. We exchanged email addresses and will be keeping in close touch.
Local Coordinators support networks of host families across the country. They work with high schools, students and families to help everyone get the most out of their exchange experience. Among their duties, Local Coordinators promote AYA in their communities, make sure that program regulations are followed, organize cultural activities and mentor AYA students. In addition to helping other host families, Local Coordinators often host AYA exchange students in their own homes and know the joys of hosting firsthand.
Many people in the community can be inspired by friendships and interactions made possible by folks opening their homes and hearts to international students, including teachers and other students. It’s thanks in large part to the efforts of Local Coordinators that we all have these wonderful opportunities. The role of Local Coordinator is a very important part of the success of AYA high school exchange.
